Records Retention

Generally, the length of time you should keep a document depends on what it records, the purpose for keeping it, and the period of limitations relating to that information.  When your records are no longer needed for tax purposes, you should not discard them without checking to see if other entities such as your insurance company or creditors require that you keep them longer.

Historical records generally document past events of the organization such as origins or activities.  They should be reviewed periodically to determine if they continue to be of value.

The following documents are only a guide; we recommend you check with the IRS, state and local government, your accountant, and/or your attorney when finalizing your business or organization’s records retention schedule.
